John Lennon’s acid stash found?

John Lennon’s Long Lost Stash of LSD Found Buried at His Kenwood Home

According to Beatles lore, in 1967 the band sent emissaries to the Monterey Pop Festival in San Francisco posing as filmmakers with the real mission of tracking down The Bear, a.k.a. Owsley Stanley, famed LSD chef and sound technician. Allegedly, the agents of The Beatles found The Bear, obtained a shitload of liquid acid and smuggled it back to John Lennon, who later decided to bury what was left of it on the grounds of his house in Kenwood, Surrey once he and the other Beatles decided to give up drugs and try Transcendental Meditation instead. When they got back from India, though, Lennon changed his mind, tried to unearth his buried treasure, and couldn’t find it. Legend has it that the massive acid stash was never found, and so became the stuff of drug mythology.

Until now — maybe. A group of builders working at the estate have reportedly dug up the remains of a leather satchel containing remnants of several broken glass bottles, and one still intact, but empty with a cracked cork. Could this be the magical mystery stash? It will take some tests and analysis to know for sure, but barring a hoax, it seems like a pretty open and shut case to me.

Thank you, Malcolm

You changed the world.

Alex Chilton, RIP

Thank you, friends
Wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you
I’m so grateful
For all the things you helped me do
All the ladies and gentlemen
Who made this all so probable
Thank you, friends
I rejoice up to the skies
Dear ones like you, the best I do
As far as can see my eyes
All you ladies and gentlemen
Who made this all so probable
Without my friends I got chaos
I’m off in a bead of light.
Without my friends I’m swept up high by the wind
Thank you, friends

WTF? Keith Richards…sober?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Can rock’n'roll exist with a sober Keith Richards?

April Fool’s Day has come early. As a flock of flying pigs sped across the London skyline last night, the Sun revealed that Keith Richards has given up drinking. Yes, you heard right: the Human Laboratory, grizzled Glimmer Twin and rock’n'roll’s own boozy Beelzebub is off the pop.

Is this a sick joke devised by the same mung-bean-munching advocates of health and safety who robbed musicians of the right to smoke in the workplace? Apparently not. Shocked by the public disintegration of his bandmate Ronnie Wood, the 66-year-old has, so we’re told, been teetotal for the last four months.

Way to go, Ronnie…grr!

Loretta Lynn Added to Lilith Fair 2010 Tour

Country music legend Loretta Lynn has added to the recently announced lineup for Lilith Fair 2010. Billboard reports that the revived music festival spotlighting female acts in all musical genres, will also add 15 cities to the already announced tour stops.

“I’m happy they wanted me on this Lilith tour,” says Loretta. “I have never done shows just with other girl singers before. When I first started out, they said girl singers couldn’t sell records or concert tickets. We’ve come a long way since then and we’re gonna have a big time out there!”

Country acts previously announced to be participating in the tour include Miranda Lambert, Emmylou Harris and Sugarland. A Nashville date has been added to the touring fest, which is returning after an 11-year hiatus. Lilith Fair was created by Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan and originally ran from 1997 to 1999.

Iommi says injured hand on mend

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has said he is making a good recovery after receiving stem-cell treatment on an injured hand.

“It’s coming on alright actually,” the acclaimed guitarist told the BBC at the Classic Rock Awards on Monday.

“I’ve already had the stem-cell treatment, so I’ve just got to wait now. It’s been six weeks but it’s feeling great.”

Iommi had been in pain after problems with his right hand joints.

He told the BBC Radio 2 Radcliffe and Maconie Show in October that the cartilage had worn out between the joints.

“It was bone to bone and it was getting a bit painful,” he said.

Chelsea Hotel Will Remember Leonard Cohen Well

Artists don’t always want to brag about things they did at the Chelsea Hotel, but Leonard Cohen will soon receive a distinction there that’s worth boasting about. On Friday, the hotel will unveil a plaque in recognition of Mr. Cohen, the singer-songwriter and poet, who resided there and wrote his song “Chelsea Hotel No. 2? in memory of it (and a liaison with Janis Joplin). The honor puts Mr. Cohen in the company of other notable former hotel denizens, including Thomas Wolfe, Arthur Miller and Dylan Thomas, who have also received plaques in its entranceway. Mr. Cohen’s plaque, which is dated Sept. 21, 2009, to honor his 75th birthday, is scheduled to be unveiled at 2:30 p.m.

Los Lobos does…Disney?

Apparently so:

LOS LOBOS GOES DISNEY FROM DISNEY SOUND PAIRS L.A.’S ICONIC MEXICAN-AMERICAN BAND WITH TIMELESS DISNEY SONGS

BURBANK, CA, October 13, 2009 – Los Lobos, the Grammy-winning East L.A. band famed for blending rock, blues and traditional Mexican music styles, is back with their first new album in three years. Los Lobos Goes Disney from Disney Sound features 13 all-time classics from Disney films and theme parks, each given the raw and raucous Los Lobos treatment. Produced by Los Lobos, the CD is set for release October 27.

Said Walt Disney Records President David Agnew, “Los Lobos’ unique style and musical vision make them one of the all-time great American bands. We are honored that Los Lobos have chosen to celebrate Disney’s musical legacy in such a joyous and beautiful way. Disney songs are classics precisely because they can be reinterpreted by iconic artists like this, generation after generation.”

With millions of records sold over the course of their 36-year career, Los Lobos is known for ignoring the conventions of popular music. Their family-friendly Disney Sound CD is no different. The band takes on timeless songs like “Heigh-Ho” (from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”), “I Wan’na Be Like You” and “Bare Necessities” (from “The Jungle Book”), “Not in Nottingham” and “Oo-De-Lally” (from “Robin Hood”) “Cruella De Vil” (from “101 Dalmatians”), “Bella Notte” (from “Lady and the Tramp”) and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” (from “Song of the South”).
