The Iranian Threat: The Bomb or the Euro?

By Dr. Elias Akleh

03/24/05 “AMIN” - - Iran does not pose a threat to the United State because of its nuclear projects, its WMD, or its support to “terrorists organizations” as the American administration is claiming, but in its attempt to re-shape the global economical system by converting it from a petrodollar to a petroeuro system. Such conversion is looked upon as a flagrant declaration of economical war against the US that would flatten the revenues of the American corporations and eventually might cause an economic collapse.

By the way, you’ll find similar editorials before the Iraqi war as well. At least the US is consistent.

Get em Gore (Vidal, not Al…)

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

Well, let us say that the old American republic is well and truly dead. The institutions that we thought were eternal proved not to be. And that goes for the three departments of government, and it also goes for the Bill of Rights. So we’re in uncharted territory. We’re governed by public relations. Very little information gets to the people, thanks to the corruption and/or ineptitude of the media. Just look at this bankruptcy thing that went through–everybody in debt to credit cards, which is apparently 90 percent of the country, is in deep trouble. So the people are uninformed about what’s being done in their name.

And that’s really why we are in Iraq. Iraq is a symptom, not a cause. It’s a symptom of the passion we have for oil, which is a declining resource in the world. Alternatives can be found, but they will not be found as long as there’s one drop of oil or natural gas to be extracted from other nations, preferably by force by the current junta in charge of our affairs. Iraq will end with our defeat.

More Gore Vidal here.

Dress code for liars

UA Young Democrat banned from forum

By Cassie Tomlin
Arizona Daily Wildcat
Tuesday, March 22, 2005

A UA student was banned from attending President Bush’s Social Security forum at the Tucson Convention Center yesterday.

UA Young Democrat Steven Gerner, a political science and pre-pharmacy sophomore, said he and three other Young Democrats had been waiting in line with their tickets for about 40 minutes when a staff member approached him and asked to read his T-shirt.

Gerner was the only one of the four wearing a UAYD T-shirt, which read, “Don’t be a smart (image of a donkey, the Democratic Party symbol). UA Young Democrats.”

Gerner said the staffer, who refused to provide his name, asked for Gerner’s ticket and crumpled it up.

The staffer walked away, returned in 20 minutes, and told Gerner his name had been added to a list banning him from entering the convention center for the speech.

“I was certainly shocked,” Gerner said. “Everyone should have access to this information.”

And more in Florida, too.

One guess as to why…

Oil shortage a pressing issue for Iraq’s economy
Two years since U.S. invasion, nation struggles to ramp up its production

“There was a kind of fantasy before the war that Iraq would suddenly produce this flood of oil that would transform the world oil market — that hasn’t happened,” said Yergin.

Ok, one guess as to why this is occuring. Anyone?
