Bush lie:

Key Bush Intelligence Briefing Kept From Hill Panel
Murray Waas

Ten days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, President Bush was told in a highly classified briefing that the U.S. intelligence community had no evidence linking the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein to the attacks and that there was scant credible evidence that Iraq had any significant collaborative ties with Al Qaeda, according to government records and current and former officials with firsthand knowledge of the matter.

In arguing their case for war with Iraq, the president and vice president said after the September 11 attacks that Al Qaeda and Iraq had significant ties, and they cited the possibility that Iraq might share chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons with Al Qaeda for a terrorist attack against the United States.

This just in. Bush lied. Thousands died.

Scariest Words in Washington: Cooperation and Plea

Michael Scanlon pleaded guilty by information today in Federal Court to a charge of conspiracy, according to the NYTimes.
Mr. Scanlon agreed to pay restitution totaling more than $19 million to the tribes, The Associated Press reported from the courtroom, and could face up to five years in prison.

Mr. Scanlon, 35, was accused of conspiring to defraud Indian tribes out of millions of dollars as part of a lobbying and corruption scheme that involved wining and dining of some lawmakers, treating them to lavish trips and contributing to their campaigns.

Until recently, Mr. Scanlon occupied a powerful - and lucrative - position at the intersection of political power and lobbying influence. For several years, he worked as a top aide to Representative Tom DeLay of Texas, the Republican majority leader. He left Mr. DeLay’s office in 2000 to become an associate of Jack Abramoff, a Republican lobbyist.

Guess the 2 or 3 folks in Washington that weren’t sweating the Fitzgerald grand jury can have their own day in spotlight.

Ha.

It’s called hypocrisy

When we use white phosphorous in battle against targets, its within the guidelines of war, but when Iraq did it, it was using a “chemical weapon”:

I suppose this is another occurence of our GWOT(Inc) footnote policy:

Germans: Bush misused data to justify Iraq war

By Bob Drogin and John Goetz

11/20/05 “McCall” — – BERLIN | The German intelligence officials responsible for one of the most important informants on Saddam Hussein’s suspected weapons of mass destruction say that the Bush administration and the CIA repeatedly exaggerated his claims before the Iraq war.

Five senior officials from Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, or BND, said in interviews with the Los Angeles Times that they warned U.S. intelligence authorities that the source, an Iraqi defector code-named Curveball, never claimed to produce germ weapons and never saw anyone else do so.

According to the Germans, President Bush mischaracterized Curveball’s information when he warned before the war that Iraq had at least seven mobile factories brewing biological poisons. Then-Secretary of State Colin L. Powell also misstated Curveball’s claims in his pre-war presentation to the United Nations on Feb. 5, 2003, the Germans said.

Curveball’s German handlers for the last six years said his information was often vague, mostly second-hand and impossible to confirm.

”This was not substantial evidence,” said a senior German intelligence official. ”We made clear we could not verify the things he said.”

Granted, this is largely a “well duh” moment, but still its nice to have continued confirmation.

Our troops have become the primary target of the insurgency,” Rep. John Murtha said Thursday. “They are united against U.S. forces and we have become a catalyst for violence. The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion.”

Congrats Rep. Murtha. America needs more like you, and less of this useless war porn circle jerking.

Great headline

When Knight-Ridder syndicates a story with the following headline, you have to think the tide is turning:

In challenging war’s critics, administration tinkers with truth

The administration’s overarching premise is beyond dispute: Administration officials, Democratic and Republican lawmakers and even leaders of foreign governments believed intelligence assessments that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. That intelligence turned out to be wrong.

But Bush, Cheney, and other senior officials have added several other arguments in recent days that distort the factual record. Below, Knight Ridder addresses the administration’s main assertions:

ASSERTION: In his speech, Bush noted that “more than a hundred Democrats in the House and the Senate - who had access to the same intelligence - voted to support removing Saddam Hussein from power.”

CONTEXT: This isn’t true.

The Congress didn’t have access to the President’s Daily Brief, a top-secret compendium of intelligence on the most pressing national security issues that was sent to the president every morning by former CIA Director George Tenet.

Well, there ya go. Major news organization calling our government a bunch of liars.

Well done!
