Truth To Power

An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it: Mohandas Gandhi

Tell ‘em Mick

Monday, April 24th, 2006

PRESIDENT George Bush can’t get no satisfaction — after Mick Jagger grabbed his hotel room.

The Rolling Stone splashed out #3,600 a night for the suite days before the US leader tried to book it.

Now Mick, 62, who has been a fierce critic of the Bush-led war in Iraq, is refusing to give it up.

The veteran rocker hired the luxury Royal Suite at the five-star Imperial Hotel in Vienna, Austria, for June when the Stones are due to play a gig in the city.

Bush Meets Privately With Think Tank Promoting Military Strike On Iran

This tidbit about President Bush’s schedule was buried in today’s Washington Post:

Bush traveled Friday night to Stanford University, where he met privately with members of the libertarian Hoover Institution to discuss the war. He concluded the day with a private dinner held by George P. Shultz, a Hoover fellow and former secretary of state.

Why is this significant? The Hoover Institution is a think tank that has been aggressively promoting the viability of a preemptive military strike in Iran.

Nice!

Neil Young begins streaming his new record, “Living With War” Friday here. I know I’m gonna be checking out the “Impeach the President” track, to start. Nice to have some protest music, finally.

How low can he go?

Friday, April 21st, 2006

When your own backyard beyatches Fox News has this news, you know the ship of Bush has begun to sink:

President Bush’s approval hits a record low of 33 percent this week, clearly damaged by sinking support among Republicans.

John Dean delivers the smackdown

Friday, April 21st, 2006

If there is no “October Surprise,” I would be shocked. And if it is not a high-risk undertaking, it would be a first. Without such a gambit, and the public always falls for them, Bush is going to lose control of Congress. Should that happen, his presidency will have effectively ended, and he will spend the last two years of it defending all the mistakes he has made during the first six, and covering up the errors of his ways.

There is, however, the possibility of another terrorist attack, and if one occurred, Americans would again rally around the president - wrongly so, since this is a presidency that lives on fear-mongering about terror, but does little to truly address it. The possibility that we might both suffer an attack, and see a boost to Bush come from it, is truly a terrifying thought.

On the mixmaster for today, fresh from a visit to the CD store…

New Flaming Lips “At war with the mystics”, Eagles of Death Metal “Death By Sexy”, new Jesu, A3, cool new soul/funkers The Bamboos and a reissue of an absolute stone classic, “My life in the bush of ghosts” by Brian Eno and David Byrne.

Hopefully, the yammering goofs will be kept at bay beyond my headphones.

Sometimes…

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

you read something and go “Damn, wish I had written that…”. This is one of those:

Now, here he is, sitting right next to all the other countries at the Big Table, representing America, it’s little Dubya Bush, stewing in his own juices, his poll numbers hovering right near Nixon levels, mumbling to himself, smelling vaguely of sawdust and horse manure and dead Social Security overhaul plans.

He is pockmarked by scandal, buffeted by storms of disapproval and infighting and nascent impeachment. He authorized the leak of classified security information merely to smear an Iraq war critic, he lied about WMD and lied about Saddam and lied about making the United States safer and lied about, well, just about everything, on top of launching the worst and most violent and most expensive, unwinnable war since Vietnam.

My vote still says George is only #2 on the list, behind Truman, but hey, still a notable achievement.
