Risks of tainted food rise as inspections drop
Amid high-profile scares, FDA safety testing has fallen by half since 2003

The federal agency that’s been front and center in warning the public about tainted spinach and contaminated peanut butter is conducting just half the food safety inspections it did three years ago.

Between 2003 and 2006, FDA food safety inspections dropped 47 percent, according to a database analysis of federal records by The Associated Press.

The government that brought you Iraq and the marvelous response to Katrina is also literally making you sick. Yet another aspect of government underfunded, while the mega rich get tax breaks. Government exists SOLELY to do those things that its citizens cannot do- inspect food, wage war, rebuild infrastructure, etc. Evidently our current crop of children in power don’t understand that, instead seeing government as a giant ATM for the Paris Hiltons and Dick Cheneys of the country.

Gen. Pace: Military capability eroding

WASHINGTON – Strained by the demands of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is a significant risk that the U.S. military won’t be able to quickly and fully respond to yet another crisis, according to a new report to Congress.

Other than looting the treasury, name something that this administration seems to be able to do well?

America, time to shop

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Congress’s auditor warned in a monthly update released last Friday that the latest data on America’s fiscal outlook shows “a federal debt burden that ultimately spirals out of control.”

Should be hearing from King George any moment now…”‘Merkans need to get out, do more shopping…heh heh heh…”

16 million in America in “deep poverty”

Monday, February 26th, 2007

In US, record numbers are plunged into poverty: report

The gulf between rich and poor in the is yawning wider than ever, and the number of extremely impoverished is at a three-decade high, a report out Saturday found.

Based on the latest available US census data from 2005, the McClatchy Newspapers analysis found that almost 16 million Americans live in “deep or severe poverty” defined as a family of four with two children earning less than 9,903 dollars — one half the federal poverty line figure.

But as long as the Limbaughs, Boortzes and Hannity’s of the world have theirs, then there is no problem. In fact, like clockwork expect Neal to harrangue these people as “losers” who shouldn’t have children if they can’t afford them. Wanna take a bet?

The sad case of Julie Amero

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Julie Amero was a victim of a school that couldn’t be bothered to protect its computers, of a prosecutor without the technology background to understand what he was doing, a police “expert” who was not, and a jury misled by all of them. “Miscarriage of justice” doesn’t begin to describe it.

Generals to Bush: Attack Iran and we walk

US generals ‘will quit’ if Bush orders Iran attack

SOME of America’s most senior military commanders are prepared to resign if the White House orders a military strike against Iran, according to highly placed defence and intelligence sources.

Tension in the Gulf region has raised fears that an attack on Iran is becoming increasingly likely before President George Bush leaves office. The Sunday Times has learnt that up to five generals and admirals are willing to resign rather than approve what they consider would be a reckless attack.

The punk rock Republican?

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Jimmy Camp, a tattooed punk rocker with a history of drug abuse and theft, is one of California’s most reliable Republican political operatives, according to a column in Tuesday’s Orange County Register.

“Maybe it isn’t uncommon for a rock musician to live on the streets of L.A. and San Francisco, to drink to excess, to take a lot of drugs, to rob people out of desperation, to get stabbed in a seedy hotel room, or to disappear for days while loved ones don’t know whether you’re dead or alive,” writes Register columnist Frank Mickadeit. “But it is uncommon among Orange County’s in-demand Republican political campaign managers. And that’s what Camp is.”

Weird. Just dang weird. Somehow, I can’t see him getting many converts in the pit at a X show…
