On capitalism

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

This is not the end of capitalism, as some wildly claim; there is no intellectual, social or political challenge to a market system based on respect for private property rights, even by the Chinese Communist party. Rather, it is a crisis of a particular capitalism that has set aside respect for trust, integrity and fairness as fuddy-duddy obstacles to ‘wealth generation’. What we are relearning is that without trust and fairness, capitalism risks its own sustainability, even while it unleashes forces that undermine those self-same values. London’s money markets froze because of a trust collapse; banks simply don’t believe each other when they say their businesses are sound and will not default on their obligations. Trust matters.

Republican IT consultant subpoenaed in case alleging tampering with 2004 election

COLUMBUS — A high-level Republican consultant has been subpoenaed in a case regarding alleged tampering with the 2004 election.

Michael L. Connell was served with a subpoena in Ohio on Sept. 22 in a case alleging that vote-tampering during the 2004 presidential election resulted in civil rights violations. Connell, president of GovTech Solutions and New Media Communications, is a website designer and IT professional who created a website for Ohio’s secretary of state that presented the results of the 2004 election in real time as they were tabulated.

Read the story- this guy is a real piece of work. And why were White House emails going thru his servers in Ohio?

Chemical irritant empties Islamic Society of Greater Dayton’s mosque

DAYTON — Baboucarr Njie was preparing for his prayer session Friday night, Sept. 26, when he heard children in the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton coughing. Soon, Njie himself was overcome with fits of coughing and, like the rest of those in the building, headed for the doors.

“I would stay outside for a minute, then go back in, there were a lot of kids,” Njie said. “My throat is still itchy, I need to get some milk.”

Njie was one of several affected when a suspected chemical irritant was sprayed into the mosque at 26 Josie St., bringing Dayton police, fire and hazardous material personnel to the building at 9:48 p.m.

Someone “sprayed an irritant into the mosque,” Dayton fire District Chief Vince Wiley said, noting that fire investigators believe it was a hand-held spray can.

According to fire dispatch communications, a child reported seeing two men with a white can spraying something into a window.

Mayor Funderburk is da stupid

South Carolina mayor ‘just curious’ if Obama is the antichrist

Fort Hill, SC Mayor Danny Funderburk said he forwarded a chain email suggesting Barack Obama is the antichrist because he was “just curious” if it was true:

“I was just curious if there was any validity to it,” Funderburk said in a telephone interview. “I was trying to get documentation if there was any scripture to back it up.”

The e-mail, which has circulated in the last six months, claims the biblical book of Revelation says the antichrist will be in his 40s and of Muslim ancestry. The Charlotte Observer reports, “There is no such scripture. And Obama is not a Muslim. But that hasn’t stopped the e-mail.” In March, CNN’s Glenn Beck wondered aloud “Is Obama the antichrist?“

Hey, South Carolina? Ever wonder if you’re really, really knuckle-dragging stupid?

Wonder no more.

The moment McCain lost the debate

Monday, September 29th, 2008

It is enough to note the moment when things went decisively south for John McCain. That point came when Obama went on the offensive in what is, I believe, the key passage from the whole ninety-minute event. I’ve noted before that Barack Obama is one of the great rhetoricians of our era, even if he loses his eloquence when shaken and unscripted. Prodded and mocked over the better part of an hour by his opponent — through the whole debate, McCain derided his “understanding” seven times, and his “naivete” three times — he finally let loose with a brutal and effective exercise in rhetorical parallelism, made the more cruel by its basic truth:

“John,” said the Democratic nominee, “you like to pretend like the war started in 2007. You talk about the surge. The war started in 2003, and at the time when the war started, you said it was going to be quick and easy. You said we knew where the weapons of mass destruction were. You were wrong. You said that we were going to be greeted as liberators. You were wrong. You said that there was no history of violence between Shiite and Sunni. And you were wrong.”

In one swoop, the superiority of John McCain on foreign affairs was laid waste.

Worth reading if only because it is penned by one of the founders of, who left once the place became a sandbox for arrested development.

Comic escapes prosecution for insulting pope

ROME (Reuters) – An Italian comic who said Pope Benedict would be punished in hell for the church’s treatment of homosexuals was spared possible prosecution on Thursday when the government blocked an investigation against her.

Sabina Guzzanti, one of Italy’s most biting political satirists, made the remarks before a cheering crowd of thousands gathered at Rome’s Piazza Navona in July.

A Rome prosecutor suspected the comments broke a law protecting the honor and dignity of the leader of 1.1 billion Roman Catholics under a 1929 Italian treaty with the Vatican.

But the treaty, signed by fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, required government approval before the investigation could go forward. Justice Minister Angelino Alfano decided to block it.

“I decided not to authorize it, knowing well the stature and capacity of the pope for forgiveness,” Alfano told Italian media.

“The Pope’s authority is far too superior to be dented (by the comments) and, in his magnanimity, he considers the case closed.”

What a bunch of narcissic megalomaniacs.

Bush decides another year of dead kids is worth it- “for political reasons”

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Oh, how the worms will feast on your eyes in hell, you worthless bastard:

Maddow: Bush extending Iraq war for political reasons

… according to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, “We suddenly have got a lot more clarity about Iraq right now than we’ve had in a really, really long time.”

Maddow cited an interview with Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki, conducted last week by Iraqi state television, during which “he said when he was negotiating with the Bush administration to pick a withdrawal date for our troops to come home, they initially settled on about 15 months from now, the end of 2010. But then … the Bush administration came back and told the Iraqis they’d actually like our troops to stay in Iraq an extra year, through 2011 … ‘due to political circumstances related to the US domestic situation.'”

“So the prime minister of Iraq says on tape,” Maddow summarized, “according to our own government’s translation, that the Bush administration wants to prolong the war in Iraq for an extra year because of our domestic politics.”

Ok, all you parents who lost children during this politically- not tactically- mandated continuation of our optional quagmire in Iraq, your children didn’t die in vain.

Well, actually? They did.

Can someone take McCain away now?

What a jackass:

McCain Leaps Into a Thicket

Senator John McCain had intended to ride back into Washington on Thursday as a leader who had put aside presidential politics to help broker a solution to the financial crisis. Instead he found himself in the midst of a remarkable partisan showdown, lacking a clear public message for how to bring it to an end.

At the bipartisan White House meeting that Mr. McCain had called for a day earlier, he sat silently for more than 40 minutes, more observer than leader, and then offered only a vague sense of where he stood, said people in the meeting.

So this is the urgent reason you had to “suspend” your campaign and rush back to DC? So you could sit at the edge of a photo-op and mumble?

Ready for President? This idiot isn’t even ready to RUN!

Somebody needs to take this doddering dolt with delusions of sanity back to Sedona, he clearly has no place on a national stage.

Something happening here

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it’s time we stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

Buffalo Springfield

Steal a little and they throw you in jail,
Steal a lot and they make you king

Bob Dylan

It’s 36 days to November 4th, election day.

36 more days of who knows what. To be more accurate, there are some people who know what’s going to happen.

Just like they knew about 9/11.

Just like they knew there were no WMDs.

The same people who have committed us to three wars- oh yeah, while you were Palin-watching, we went to war with Pakistan– those people know what’s gonna happen.

You see, they made plans:

Brigade homeland tours start Oct. 1

3rd Infantry’s 1st BCT trains for a new dwell-time mission. Helping ‘people at home’ may become a permanent part of the active Army

The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.

Now they’re training for the same mission — with a twist — at home.

Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or man made emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.

They may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack.

Civil unrest and crowd control? For what? The closest thing we’ve had to that in recent memory was the Battle of Seattle, and that is barely a blip on the radar.

But they made plans:

Homeland Security Contracts for Vast New Detention Camps

BERKELEY, Calif.–A Halliburton subsidiary has just received a $385 million contract from the Department of Homeland Security to provide “temporary detention and processing capabilities.”

The contract — announced Jan. 24 by the engineering and construction firm KBR — calls for preparing for “an emergency influx of immigrants, or to support the rapid development of new programs” in the event of other emergencies, such as “a natural disaster.”

We’ve watched, and blogged, and marched, and generally did fuck all while a tyrannical government stripped us of such quaint conventions such as habeas corpus, freedom of speech, right to free assembly, verifiable elections, and freedom from torture, just to name a few. We rose up in mighty protest in 2006, put the “opposition party” into power- and a blizzard of press conferences and sternly worded letters later- absolutely nothing- nothing- has been done to stay the collapse of this nation into fascism.

They made plans:

White House Dispatches Team to Push Economic Bill

Paulson said Congress and the administration must move rapidly.

“We must do so in order to avoid a continuing series of financial institution failures and frozen credit markets that threaten American families’ financial well-being, the viability of businesses both small and large, and the very health of our economy,” Paulson said in remarks as prepared for delivery. “The market turmoil we are experiencing today poses great risk to U.S. taxpayers.”

Fratto said it would be “unthinkable” for Congress not to pass legislation this week, asserting the result would be a “very, very serious situation” for the U.S. economy.

Fratto insisted that the plan was not slapped together and had been drawn up as a contingency over previous months and weeks by administration officials. He acknowledged lawmakers were getting only days to peruse it, but he said this should be enough.

Sound like anything familiar? Maybe the run-up to the war in Iraq, with that lying jackal Powell shaking vials of table salt and calling them anthrax? The overnight passage of the Patriot Act? Same people, same plans, same end results.

We have sat on our hands and watched as the money changers have essentially bankrupted America by swapping more debt than there exists money in the world- and now we’re going to pay these thieves 700 billion (a fake number, btw) for the privilege?

So what is happening here? What is going to happen between now and election day? John McCain doesn’t care, he’s “suspended” his campaign in yet another stunt, vital, since the shine has faded from his last brain-dead “maverick” escapade that gave us Palin, a candidate too stupid to be allowed to speak in public.

Will we even have an election? And if we do, what is to stop them from just stealing it outright, as they did in 2004? Or perhaps the next redneck whackadoo with a gun store in the back seat and a nose of meth gets past the guards and actually takes Obama out?

What would it be then? McCain by decree? Another four years of Bush/Cheney? What’s to stop them? And when they are finally convinced that they have sucked every possible dime out of China (because America doesn’t have anything left to steal), are they just going to wander off into the mist, scot-free?

They made plans:
