Crony Capitalism: Wall Street’s Favorite Politicians

A full 90 members of Congress who voted to bailout Wall Street in 2008 failed to support financial reform reining in the banks who drove our economy off a cliff. But when you examine campaign contribution data, it’s really no surprise that these particular lawmakers voted to mortgage our economic future to Big Finance: This election cycle, they’ve raked in over $48.8 million from the financial establishment. Over the course of their Congressional careers, the figure swells to a massive $176.9 million.

The full list of these Crony Capitalists is below, along with the money they pulled in from Big Finance, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics ( The career data goes back to 1989. Of the 69 House members who voted with Wall Street on both the bailout and financial reform, 60 are Republicans, while nine are Democrats. All 21 Senators who voted with Wall Street on both issues are Republicans, and Republicans raked in over 90 percent of the total campaign contributions.

Sorry if we offended any whores who actually earn their money…meaning they aren’t in Congress.

O’Donnell just can’t keep from lying

Another Christine O’Donnell embellishment: She misleadingly claims she studied at Oxford

In another move that will raise further questions about Christine O’Donnell’s embellishment of her education record, she claims she studied at the University of Oxford — but a look at her actual record shows this is at best an exaggeration and at worst an outright falsehood.

O’Donnell’s LinkedIn bio page lists “University of Oxford” as one of the schools she attended, claiming she studied “Post Modernism in the New Millennium.” But it turns out that was just a course conducted by an institution known as the Phoenix Institute, which merely rented space at Oxford.

What’s more, the woman who oversaw Phoenix Institute’s summer program at Oxford tells me O’Donnell’s claim about studying at Oxford is “misleading.”

It’s not that she lies- she’s a political hack, they all lie, it’s how they breathe- but rather that she’s so damn bad at it. This is the online age, dear…you can’t just toss out any twaddle that enters that hairsprayed brain of yours and expect people to accept it without verifying.

So, to be clear, dear: We don’t hate you because you lie-but because you’re stupid.

Got it, dimwit?

Political Forum Fights Back Against Righthaven Copyright Troll Suit
Bogus Copyright Claims Used to Threaten Democratic Underground

Las Vegas – The online political discussion forum Democratic Underground is fighting back against a lawsuit filed by copyright troll Righthaven LLC, arguing in court documents filed Monday that the short excerpt of a news article at issue in the suit is a clear case of fair use.

Democratic Underground — represented by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Winston & Strawn LLP, and attorney Chad Bowers — was sued by Righthaven on August 10 for a five-sentence excerpt of a Las Vegas Review-Journal news story that a user posted on the forum, with a link back to the Review-Journal website. Righthaven has brought over 130 lawsuits in Nevada federal court claiming copyright infringement, even though they do not create, produce or distribute any content. Instead, they create lawsuits by scouring the Internet for content from Review-Journal stories posted on blogs and online forums, acquiring the copyright to that particular story from Stephens Media LLC (the Review-Journal’s publisher), and then suing the poster for infringement.

Nice way to chill free speech, by launching endless- and spurious- lawsuits claiming copyright infringement. How many bloggers and forums will this scare into submission?

Not this one, in case you’re wondering.

Hillary Clinton and State Dept. to Celebrate War Criminal Henry Kissinger, While the White House Repeats His Deadly Mistakes

Nothing more symbolizes how the temptations of power can corrupt youthful values and idealism than Secretary Hillary Clinton’s invitation to Henry Kissinger and Richard Holbrooke to keynote a major State Department conference on the history of the Indochina war. As an idealistic college student, Clinton protested Kissinger’s mass murder of civilians in Indochina. She knows full well that had the international laws protecting civilians in war been applied to Kissinger’s bombing of civilian targets in Indochina he would have been indicted for crimes of war.

But on Sept. 29 she will introduce Kissinger at the State Department Historian’s conference, giving him a platform to continue 40 years of Orwellian deception in which he has sought to blame Congress for the fall of Indochina rather than accepting responsibility for his massive miscalculations and indifference to human suffering.

The man should be in jail, not on a dais.

Too whackadoo for the GOP? Whoa.

GOP will try to get own candidate off NY ballot

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Republicans will try to remove their own candidate from the ballot in a suburban New York congressional race because he wrote an article warning against racial mingling, a party official said Wednesday.

Jim Russell, 56, a perennial GOP candidate known for his strong opposition to immigration, wrote in 2001 that parents should teach their children “an acceptance of appropriate ethnic boundaries for socialization and for marriage.”

Several times, he cited the eugenics movement, the effort to improve the human race by controlling heredity. In a long recitation of the accomplishments of Western civilization, he also quoted T.S. Eliot as writing, “reasons of race and culture combine to make any large number of freethinking Jews undesirable.”

Westchester County Republican Chairman Doug Colety called Russell’s article “racist.”

“We’ve denounced his campaign,” Colety said. “We’re not supporting him. We’ve withdrawn funds, volunteers, all resources. This is not the way Republicans think.”

Wow. Too racist for the GOP. That’s sayin’ something, buddy.

Nanowire-Coated Cotton Cleans Water by Zapping Bacteria to Death

Illness-inducing bacteria, meet nano-engineered cotton–and a quick death. Researchers have created a new “filter” that zaps bacteria with electric fields to clean drinking water. They say their system may find use in developing countries since it requires only a small amount of voltage (a couple of car batteries, a stationary bike, or a solar panel could do the job) and cleans water an estimated 80,000 times faster than traditional devices.

Instead of trapping bacteria in small pores like many slow-going traditional filters, the cotton and silver nanowire combo uses small electric currents running through the nanowires to kill the bacteria outright. In a paper to appear in the journal Nano Letters researchers say that 20 volts and 2.5 inches worth of the material killed 98 percent of Escherichia coli in the water they tested in their lab setup.

UK Proposes All Paychecks Go to the State First

The UK’s tax collection agency is putting forth a proposal that all employers send employee paychecks to the government, after which the government would deduct what it deems as the appropriate tax and pay the employees by bank transfer.

The proposal by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) stresses the need for employers to provide real-time information to the government so that it can monitor all payments and make a better assessment of whether the correct tax is being paid.

So, you work your 40, your employer sends your money to the government, who then decides to return some of it back to you. That the general idea? Based on whatever tax rate they need at any given moment, basically?

I now understand completely why Brits aren’t allowed to own guns.

This just in: Saxby Chambliss is a homophobe

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Well it sure was a busy day on the hatin’ gays front for Georgia’s embarrassment in Congress, Saxby Chambliss. First he wraps up his hatred of gays in a nice “support the troops” bullshit hogie roll:

But the primary purpose of the armed forces is to prepare for and prevail in combat should the need arise. Military life is fundamentally different from civilian life, and military society is characterized by its own laws, rules, customs and traditions – including restrictions on personal behavior that would not be acceptable in civilian society.

Examples include alcohol use, adultery, fraternization and body art. If we change this rule of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” what are we going to do with these other issues?

Uh, its the military, jackass. They have rules. Rules are followed, and if not, punishment meted out. Next?

Next? How about employing an entire office of gay haters?

I’ve just gotten off the phone with Atlanta Journal-Constitution political writer Jim Galloway who says that Sen. Saxby Chambliss has confirmed that the “All faggots must die” comment left here on JMG earlier today did indeed come from his Atlanta office.

And this man claims to “represent” me. Fuck that.

Alcohol Lobby Now Openly Spending Against CA’s Legal Pot Initiative in Alliance with Police Industrial Complex

It is said that politics makes strange bedfellows, but there are arguably few stranger than the emerging alliance between two of California’s most powerful political players: the police-industrial complex and Big Alcohol. Campaign finance reports from the Golden State disclose that the California Beer and Beverage Distributors — a trade organization that represents over 100 beer distributors statewide — is one of the primary backers of the lobby group Public Safety First, sponsors of the No on Prop. 19 campaign.

Some folks just can’t abide competition. Smoke ’em if ya got ’em, I say. Then have a glass of home brewed beer. Fuck ’em.
